Horse grooming
(caring for your horse through horse cleaning)

Horse grooming should be done at least two or three times a week. If you can you should try to groom (clean) your horse daily. You should always groom your horse before you ride it. Dirt underneath the saddle can cause sores and irritation to the horse.

Horse grooming is best when always done from the same side. You for instance start on the left side and work until you finish at the right side. The horse grooming tools should be kept in a dry and safe place. Get a wide bucket or a horse grooming box where you can keep all the brushes.

Horse grooming tools:

  • Curry comb
  • Tail comb
  • Hoof pick tool
  • Body brush
  • Sponge
  • Cloth.

Apart from the basic equipment you can also purchase:

  • Horse grooming spray
  • Clippers.

Topical cream or ointments for the horse's hoofs can be also be obtained. Before you start make sure that the horse is secured and tied with cross ties. Follow the instructions on ointments and applications carefully. Don't place the equipment too close to the animal as you may fall over it while busy with the horse grooming.

Use a dandy brush to remove dirt from the coat. It can be used on the body, but should not be used on sensitive parts of the body. Use the body brush which is a bit softer for the sensitive areas such as the ear and head areas. Clean the body brush with a curry comb to get rid of hairs and oils on the body brush. You can use a rubber curry comb to remove mud from the body. Comb the tails and mane with a man comb to get rid of tangles and the water brush should be used for the application of water onto the body. Get the coat shiny with the stable rubber.

The hooves should be cleaned three times a week. Look for dirt and stones stuck in the horse shoe. Use a hoof picke for the cleaning. Even the smallest stone or piece of dirt should be removed.

Establish a weekly horse grooming routine to ensure the horse knows what is expected from him. Horse cleaning is fun and will help to build a solid relationship of trust with your horse.
